There's no better place to experience the culture of Gascony than the attractive Gers department. The entire area is situated on a plateau, with a number of rivers traversing it. In the south, there are mountains which exceed 1,100 feet in height. The economy is shifting away from its reliance upon agriculture although it is still thought of as France's most rural department. Don't forget to try the Foie Gras while you're here.
Situated along the banks of the River Gers, Auch is the departmental capital of the Gers with a population of around 25,000 people. The town has been a major crossroads since Roman times and still has a bustling market every Saturday. Work began on Auch's cathedral in 1489 but it took 200 years to complete. It contains some wonderful stained glass windows from the early 16th century made by a Gascon artist called Arnaud de Moles and incredible choir stalls that took 50 years to create. The 113 stalls are decorated with over 1,500 delicately crafted carved figures.
Situated beside the River Baise in the north of the department, Condom is home to an extremely attractive cathedral. It also has a number of fine restaurants offering the very best in Gascon cuisine.
Another local speciality is the drink Armagnac. There's even a museum to teach you more about it. The best way to buy some is through independent producers who advertise their wares on road signs across the area.
Further down the River Baise, in the south of the department, is Mirande. The town was founded in 1286 by monks and was later taken over by the counts of Astarac. It is now chiefly a market town, although it was once, as is evident by the strict layout, a bastide. Much of the ramparts still remain, albeit in ruins. Today the town is home to around 4,000 people. The town church, which dates back to the early 15th century, is of architectural interest as the belfry was built in a Flemish style.
If you are flying to the Gers from the UK, your best option is to fly into either Biarritz, Toulouse, Lourdes or Bordeaux airports. Toulouse also has a station served by the high speed TGV trains. It is also possible to get here by boat. There are ferries travelling to both Santander and Bilbao in Spain from the UK, both of which are within easy driving distance from the Gers.
The department is very popular with British buyers as it is considered to not only be the heart of Gascony, but also the gateway to the region. The area is quite wealthy and so there are few cheap homes available. However, the more affordable properties are to be found away from Auch.
