Jegun - a bastide village set in glorious surroundings

South-west France is known for its lovely bastide towns. Built to a regulated pattern, with a central square and grid-like streets radiating off, these towns have a very special atmosphere. Jegun is just such a town. Its mediaeval market hall and half-timbered buildings are both typical and delightful. Jegun also benefits from glorious surroundings. Set in the ancient region of Gascony, the town sits against a backdrop of unspoilt rolling countryside, rivers and lakes.

Life in the village

Jegun offers good local amenities. There's a bakery, a grocer's shop, three butchers and a library. Jegun also boasts a bar and restaurant, so social occasions are possible without having to travel. Of course, there will be times when you need to hop into the car and access larger amenities like supermarkets, but these are easily found locally in nearby towns like the delightful town of Vic Fezensac or in Auch.

Heritage of Jegun

As a typical example of a bastide town, Jegun's heritage is interesting and enjoyable to discover. The timbered market hall is notable, and several other buildings also bear the stamp of mediaeval origins. Also worthy of attention is the Church of Saint Candide, a beautiful collegial church dating back to the 12th century.

Outdoor activities on offer

The glorious countryside of the Gers lends itself perfectly to a simple, outdoor life, and there are opportunities to enjoy pastimes like walking, horse-riding, fishing, cycling and swimming in lakes and rivers. Golfers can access excellent courses nearby. The coast is around 40 kilometres distant, and quite within reach for day trips. In winter, skiing is available in the stunning Pyrénéan Mountains, less than 50 kilometres away from Jegun.

Visit the market town of Vic Fezensac and ancient Auch

Jegun has the feel of being lost in the peaceful countryside of Gascony, yet there are plenty of interesting places to visit nearby. Market towns like Vic Fezensac are well worth a visit, the town playing host to a programme of cultural events that give a real taste of the region. The old town of Auch, the capital town of the Gers, is packed with heritage and culture, and there's more than enough to discover to make more than one visit well worthwhile.

How to get there

Travelling to the region from the UK is simple, although you will need a car to make the most of a stay in this predominantly rural area. The nearest ferry port is that of Caen, although any of the ferry ports are a possible arrival point. If you choose to fly, head for Pau, or for more choice of flights and airlines, to Toulouse. There's a railway station at Auch, just 15 kilometres from Jegun. The town lies on the D103. The nearest major road is the N124.

Property prices and availability in and around Jegun

Although the Gers is not one of the cheapest regions for property, it offers a chance to find some of France's most beautiful character homes. Prices compare well with those equivalent properties in the UK, and it's currently possible to find stunning stone-built country properties to fulfil anybody's dreams.
