Miélan is a gorgeous bastide town found in the Gers department of south-west France. It dates to mediaeval times when these fortified bastides were built to regenerate areas decimated by the destruction of war. Life in Miélan is laid back and pleasant. So if you enjoy French country life and like the connection to the past displayed by the buildings of this little town, a property in Miélan could be just what you are looking for.
Miélan shows off its heritage in every stone, the town being full of mediaeval character. Typical of a bastide town, it has a lovely central arcaded square surrounded by a grid pattern of old streets, lined with many half-timbered houses, and a traditional Mairie. The Church of St Bartholomew with its Gothic tower is impressive, and there's a little chapel in town as well.
Miélan is a market town with a traditional French country market held in the square on Thursday mornings. There are also a handful of shops and services. There's a baker's, a butcher's, a newsagent's, a hairdresser and a petrol station. You can find a supermarket for convenience shopping too. A cash machine is another useful addition. If you require more choice of shops and services it only takes a short drive to reach the nearby larger towns of Maubourget, Tarbes, Auch and Pau. Miélan also offers two good restaurants where the rich Gascon cuisine can be enjoyed.
Just outside Miélan is a great little swimming lake. Perfect for cooling off on hot, southern summer days, it's got water slides and a beach, plus picnic tables. That'll keep the kids happy then! The rural area is also wonderful for walkers, cyclists and horse-riders to enjoy their sports, without being bothered by traffic. As long as you keep off the N21, of course. Golf courses are found nearby at Lannemezan, and Auch.
Tarbes (famed for its horses), Auch and Pau are the most important towns in the area and are all worth getting to know. Market towns like Maubourget are also fun to visit and great for shopping. If you've ever wondered what the famous pilgrim town of Lourdes is like, by all means take a trip. It's not far away and it is fascinating. It can be described as inspirational, if you are devout, or a little tacky if not, but it is never less than intriguing. The region's capital city of Toulouse is a bit further away, but still quite accessible and well worth a day trip.
Fly to Pau or Toulouse directly from the UK. Both are served by Flybe, with Toulouse also being served by Jet2, easyJet, Bmi Baby and charter airlines. Bilbao/Santander is the nearest ferry port if you enjoy a sea crossing. Fans of the TGV can travel to Pau or Toulouse by rail, while if you are travelling by car, it's easy to find the town as it lies beside the N21 non toll motorway.
While the property around Miélan isn't the cheapest around, it is still reasonably priced and there are some really super properties currently for sale. Miélan is the perfect spot for anyone seeking a traditional Gascon farmhouse or large country property.
