A gateway for the pilgrims

The town of Mirande lies in the ancient region of Gascony, in the Gers department of south-west France. It is a thirteenth century bastide town with a magnificent arched gateway through which the pilgrims on the trail to Santiago de Compostela must pass. The town, founded by monks, was originally a fortified town and parts of the original ramparts can still be seen although they are mostly in ruins nowadays. The town has several buildings of architectural interest that are still standing, and one of the more interesting of these is the early fifteenth century church with its Flemish style belfry.

Exemplary town planning!

Mirande is a remarkable example of the amazing town planning that went into the construction of the fortified towns of this period. It becomes even more impressive when you imagine the fortifications as they were when intact! The town as it is today, however, is still very much worth a visit.

Attractive town with modern conveniences

It is attractive, with old half timbered houses and ancient streets, and is well supplied with modern conveniences such as supermarkets and banks, as well as the traditional French pleasures such as patisseries, chocolateries, wine caves and hairdressers! The town also has an extremely lively and colourful market, and you will be well advised not to miss this, as it is a slice of French life which never fails to fascinate and delight.

A Gascon gastronomic paradise…

Foodies will adore Mirande, for the gastronomy in the Gers department is the richest and most delicious in France. Duck proliferates, and it is served in many guises. Enjoy it as magret (duck breast) cooked over hot coals and served pink, or try melt in the mouth confit de canard… duck preserved in goose fat. Then of course, there is the ultimate rich delicacy of Foie Gras. Wash it all down with a glass or two of locally produced Armagnac, or try Floc, a drink peculiar to the Gers, made from Armagnac and grape juice. Mirande has a number of excellent restaurants, so you will have plenty of opportunities to try local specialities.

Working off the calories…

A rural region such as the Gers offers many sporting opportunities as well as gastronomic pleasures. Mirande has a golf course close to the town, and the area is perfect for cycling, horse-riding, hiking and sailing on lakes and rivers. Petanque and boules are as popular here as anywhere in France, and you could also try your hand at the less common games of palets (similar to skittles, but more complex) and quilles, which involves trying to knock over posts using metal discs! If you prefer to take a more armchair role in your sporting pleasures, you could find yourself a ringside seat at a Course Landaise… a non-blood sports type of bull fight. Then of course there is always rugby, which is the abiding passion of almost all the department. And finally, if you are there in July, don't forget the music festival!

How to get there

Mirande is best accessed by air from Toulouse airport, which offers services from the UK with a variety of airlines, including low cost options. The ferry from the UK to Santander /Bilbao is also possible, as Mirande is not far from these ports. Fans of the TGV super fast trains can travel to Toulouse on these, having taken Eurostar to Paris first.

Property prices and availability in and around Mirande

The area is popular with British buyers, probably as there are so many gorgeous traditional farm type properties available, and also the landscapes of the Gers are irresistible. This popularity has led to price increases, but if you stay away from the main town of Auch it is still possible to find excellent properties for reasonable prices, as the Gers remains one of the more affordable parts of the south.
