Riscle - a rural life with additional attractions!

The pretty market village of Riscle lies in the softly undulating countryside of the Gers department in south-west France. And although it has a population of just 1,675 inhabitants, it offers a veritable feast of exciting things to do and see in its locality. Even within this little village itself there are no less than six restaurants! And within easy reach of Riscle you can find attractions such as a motor racing circuit, a famous jazz festival, chateaux, leisure lakes and endless sports on offer.

A town with all you need

Riscle is small but well equipped to offer a relaxing holiday base or a permanent home in the beautiful rural Gers department. The little village has a bustling market every Friday, a good selection of local shops (including a small but very useful supermarket) and a collection of friendly and welcoming bars and restaurants which is not at all bad for a village with a population of well under 2,000! Everything you need is on hand, cash points, doctors, dentists... you don't even have to get the car out.

Why not visit the art gallery or swimming pool?

The village itself is authentic and historic, with the attractive main square being the focus for village life. Here you can find an 11th century church and a sparkling fountain in addition to cafés and bars where you can relax and refresh yourself whilst watching the world go by. For something a little different, and also somewhat unexpected in such a small, rural village, Riscle has a very good modern art gallery. If you want to get a little active, you can take advantage of the excellent swimming pool in the village, or go back to nature and enjoy a swim in one of the nearby lakes.

Out and about

You may think of Riscle as a sleepy little backwater lost in the vast Gers countryside, but you would be wrong. There is so much to see and do near the village that you will find yourself spoilt for choice, and if you only have a few days to spend here you will undoubtedly find yourself wanting to return soon so that you can catch up on everything you missed on your first visit!

Watch the motor racing at Nogaro

There are a number of historic towns and villages to see locally, but if you feel you have seen enough of local history and architecture you can always pop along to neighbouring Nogaro and watch some exciting motor racing at the acclaimed circuit.

Enjoy nearby festivals

The area is home to numerous cultural events, and some, such as the International Jazz Festival of Marciac and the Tempo Latino Festival at Fezenzac are really exceptional and attract visitors from all over the world. The colourfully named town of Condom is also accessible from a base in Riscle, and has a very intriguing museum. As to its subject, well, the clue is in the name of the town!

How to get there

There are several arrival airports to choose from if you are flying to the area. Pau, with flights from budget airline Ryanair, is just a 40-minute drive from Riscle, but if you want more choice of airline or departure points you could fly to Toulouse, Bordeaux or Bergerac. The TGV runs into Toulouse and Bordeaux, or you can take the sea option and enjoy the ferry trip all the way from the UK to Bilbao. Drivers can access the town from the D935, D946 or D25.

Property prices and availability in and around Riscle

Property in the Gers can be found at very reasonable prices, and although the area is becoming more widely appreciated there are still plenty of excellent properties on the market. Prices start at just over 50,000 Euros at the time of writing, giving everyone a chance to purchase their own little piece of this lovely and historic area.
