Caraman, in the Haute-Garonne region of south-west France, sits on a high point and overlooks a varied and beautiful rural landscape. In the distance to the south, lie Spain and the Pyrenean Mountains, and closer, at the town's feet, are the pretty plains of the Lauragais and the rivers and lakes of the Haute-Garonne. Caraman is set in Cathar country, in a region which suffered badly during the brutal wars of religion in the 11th century. All around the region there are signs of this troubled past, and anyone interested in the history will find plenty of fuel for their research around Caraman. Apart from the turmoil of the past, however, Caraman and its environs are tranquil and calm. It is a place where the rhythms of life are defined by the seasons and the weather, much as they always have been.
The town has an elegant air, and although it could not be described as a bustling metropolis, it does provide most of the necessities of life. There are shops, banking facilities, a small selection of good restaurants, and plenty of opportunities to take part in a wide variety of sports.
As Caraman is not too far from the Pyrénées, with their excellent ski resorts, winter is as good a time to visit as summer. The lovely countryside of the Haute-Garonne positively invites you to try horse-riding or cycling along its lanes and trails, and walking never ceases to be a pleasure. Caraman also has two lakes, the Lac de Saint Sermin and the Lac de la Gimone, both of which offer great fishing as well as picnic areas to enjoy.
When in Caraman, don't miss the opportunity to spend some time in the great city of Toulouse. Known as the Pink City, because of the distinctive pink brick from which much of its buildings are fashioned, Toulouse has culture, shopping, superb gastronomy and much, much more to discover. For an altogether different experience you could head for the Saturday morning market at Revel, reputed to be one of the finest in France, or to the beautiful lake at St Ferréol, where you can swim, fish, boat, windsurf and even dine at one of the great restaurants along the lakeside.
To reach Caraman from the UK is really easy, as Toulouse has both an international airport (flights with easyJet, British Airways, flybe, bmi, and bmibaby) and also a TGV station.
Property around Caraman is not the cheapest in France, but the town has its compensations for this! There are some really beautiful rural properties on the market just outside the town, the way of life is the relaxing "good life" that is the dream of many who are contemplating a move to France, and travel to and from the UK is easy, thanks to the proximity of Toulouse.

Caraman is located in south-west France, in the far east of the Haute-Garonne department, close to the border with Tarn.
Population: 1,944
Access: By air: Caraman lies close to Toulouse with its airport at Blagnac, so air travel is simple. By rail: Toulouse has a TGV station, making rail travel a viable option.
Economy: The economy is varied, but principally rural.
Interesting fact: The name of the town is thought to come from local dialect words for face (cara) and hand (main). The coat of arms shows both a human face and a hand, so it would seem to bear out the theory.
