The ancient town of Montréjeau is located in south-west France close to the ski resorts of the Midi-Pyrénées, Spain and Andorra. It is a lovely bastide town, a fortified place built in the 13th century to withstand attack from the English. Bastide towns are quite distinctive in design, having arcaded central squares and streets following a grid pattern. There is also usually a fortified church and in these respects, Montréjeau is no exception. The town is busy and thriving today, with a great atmosphere and friendly inhabitants.
The town has all modern amenities, with good shops, banks and hairdressers. For those leisure times, there is also a good selection of bars, cafés and restaurants. If you love French culture you are in for a treat here, as Montréjeau is known also for its great festivals held throughout the summer.
If you happen to be one of those people who live for the days when you can chase a little white ball around a golf course, then Montréjeau is the place for you. There is a lovely golf course called Golf de Comminges in Montréjeau, beside the Garonne River. Scenic and friendly, it's a great place to spend time getting a little gentle exercise and improving your handicap into the bargain.
Golf isn't the only sport here... in fact Montréjeau is known to be a place for outdoor sports enthusiasts. For those so inclined, hang gliding, fishing and rock climbing are all on offer in the area. The town also lies only a very short drive from the ski resorts of the French Pyrénées, and of Spain and Andorra, so it isn't only in the summer that you will want to spend time in this place.
