Its narrow streets are lined with mediaeval buildings that create a sense of living history, yet the town also offers excellent amenities for its residents and visitors. Its setting, in the north-west of the Lot department, is beautiful, and offers opportunities for enjoying outdoor pursuits. It's also close to all the acclaimed attractions of the Dordogne.
Martel is only a fairly small town, yet it has a really vibrant community life. There is a great programme of fetes and festivals, with such celebrations as antiques fairs, dance evenings and concerts, all offering a taste of French country life. Street markets are held twice weekly, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and there can be no better place to find fresh local produce and regional specialities. But you don't have to rely on the markets, as the town has a comprehensive collection of shops and facilities at your disposal. There are banks, doctors and dentists, bars and restaurants, in addition to a pharmacy, a supermarket, bakeries, a post office and wine shops. And you can pamper yourself in the hairdressers or the beauty parlour when you feel like a little self-indulgence, all without leaving town!
This lovely mediaeval town excels when it comes to heritage. Known for its seven towers and host of historical monuments, it offers plenty to discover, right there on the doorstep. Among the sights worth seeing are churches, cloisters, the towers, many original 15th century houses and the Palace Raymondie, which dates to the 13th century.
You'll never have to worry about being bored in Martel. Whether you're looking for something to entertain the family (try the nearby attraction of Reptiland, home to fascinating snakes and other reptiles, always a winner with the kids!), or you fancy getting outdoors and energetic (how about a spot of cave diving?), there's no lack of choice. Walkers, cyclists, fishermen are all offered their chosen leisure activities. Then those who prefer to take life at a gentler pace, can simply enjoy visits to nearby beautiful villages and heritage spots such as Curemonte and Carennac.

If you're driving, the town, which is situated on the D840, is also near to the A20 motorway.
Being close to the Dordogne yet not within its boundaries, means that you can get a little more house for your money in Martel than you would in that very popular department. From a building plot for under 30,000 Euros to a farmhouse with outbuildings for an incredible 129,000 Euros, there are a lot of options for those with limited budgets. At the higher end of the market you can pick up a really unique and stunning home for less than 500,000 Euros.
