For buying and selling property in Montcuq
The town of Montcuq, which lies in south-west France in the ancient region of the Quercy Blanc, is a vibrant agricultural community famed for its gourmet treats such as meringues and waffles. Lying in the beautiful Quercy countryside, Montcuq is a town that has considerable charm, with its old stone buildings, a 13th century tower and dungeon, and traditional street market.
Like many towns in south-west France, Montcuq was caught up in the Cathar tragedy, having its strongholds violated and its defenders massacred on more than one occasion. The town, whose history also dates back to Roman times, has been taken by the English and ransacked by the Huguenots, giving it a turbulent and interesting past! Montcuq still has an old tower and dungeon, marking its place in history.
Montcuq has a super street market every Sunday morning, and nothing beats a leisurely stroll through the streets, browsing the colourful goods on offer and chatting to friends. A town with a Sunday market has an added advantage too, as in rural France it is unusual to find shops that are open on Sunday, so a market is a boon if you have forgotten to buy some vital ingredients for your Sunday dinner! The town is also equipped with a good selection of local shops and a couple of supermarkets. All other everyday facilities such as schools, banks, health care etc. are also easy to access here.
For a smallish town, Montcuq is able to offer some attractive options for dining out, with a handful of good restaurants in the town and many more not far away. The Lot is a respected wine area too, with some wonderful wines from Cahors and Figeac, so make sure that you try them. It is certainly worth making a trip to a vineyard and cave to taste the wines and learn a little about the process that creates them.
Although Montcuq was chosen by the online community of France to appear on French Monopoly, Hasbro (the toy manufacturer), declined to put the town on the board in the interests of decency! Though they do say it will feature in a future "humorous" version of the game!
Montcuq is situated in a great area for sporting pursuits, with almost any activity you can name on the doorstep. The generally good sunny weather of this part of France also makes outdoor activities more appealing than in a rainier, colder northern town! Make your choice from golf, horse-riding, walking, fishing, swimming, cycling, tennis and many more.
The TGV stops of Figeac and Toulouse in the region make it easy to access Montcuq by rail. The nearest airports offering direct flights from the UK are Rodez (Ryanair), Toulouse (British Airways, easyJet, bmi, flybe and Jet2) and Bergerac (Ryanair and flybe).
Property in Montcuq is desirable and likely to be sought after, although prices can still be reasonable, especially when compared with British property. It is a good place to seek a renovation property, and there are some good bargains currently on the market.

Montcuq is located in south-west France. It lies in the south-west of the Lot department, close to the border with the Tarn-et-Garonne.
Population: 1,310
Access: By air: Fly to Rodez or Bergerac. By rail: The TGV stops at Figeac and Toulouse making train travel another option.
Economy: The economy is mainly agricultural, with tourism also a feature.
Interesting fact: Montcuq was given the most votes by the online community of France, when asked to choose towns to appear on French Monopoly. This was due to a (slightly cheeky!) play on the pronunciation of the town's name.
