Souillac - a lively market town

Souillac is a lively small market town that is found in the Dordogne River Valley, in south-west France. Set in lovely countryside giving it a rich natural heritage, Souillac has also an interesting built heritage to discover. The location, near to many of the region's favourite attractions, is ideal whether you want to relax in tranquil country or to explore historic towns and sights.

Well equipped town with three markets a week!

Looking around the town, the first thing you will notice is the Abbey Church of Sainte Marie. The church is vast and replete with Romanesque sculptures and really worth a visit. The town has several other buildings and old streets of note. Souillac also offers a full complement of shops and services, so you can get everything you need without leaving town. Lovers of French food and dining out will be able to enjoy a choice of restaurants in Souillac too. Market days are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Activities available in Souillac

In Souillac you can visit a museum, play tennis or swim. Fishing, canoeing or playing a round of golf is also possible, as all these activities are available.

Explore the Pays de Souillac

Souillac is set in the Dordogne River Valley, and the immediate area is known as the Pays de Souillac. The calm beauty of the countryside encourages you to enjoy outdoor activities such as walking along the banks of the river, or straying off the beaten track to see grottos, monuments and bridges. Don't miss Souillac's viaducts. There is even a cave with an underground river where you can take an unforgettable boat trip.

Visit the ancient town of Rocamadour

Nearby towns, like Rocamadour (an ancient pilgrim town which clings precariously to a rocky hilltop) are fascinating to visit. Souillac is also something of a paradise for foodies, as the area abounds in goodies like truffles, goats' cheeses, Foie Gras, walnuts and a range of charcuterie.

How to get there

To get to the area by plane you can fly to the Brive Vallée de la Dordogne Airport, just fifteen kilometres away from Souillac, though currently this only has limited seasonal flights. Other airports within reach include Limoges, Rodez and Toulouse. Limoges is served by Ryanair and Flybe; Rodez by Ryanair; and Toulouse by easyJet, Jet2, BMI Baby and charter flights. Rail travel is also possible to these towns, with smaller networks and local services which can get you right to Souillac. The A20/E9 motorway is right beside Souillac, so getting there by car is really straightforward.
