The town of Grisolles, which is found in the Tarn-et-Garonne department of south-west France, has an attractive location beside the Canal du Midi. Grisolles has a small canal port, where the boats moor overnight and this brings a holiday air to the town in the summer months. The canal is picturesque even in winter, when the boats disappear for repairs and the canal is a haven of peace and tranquillity once more.
There are plenty of shops and services in Grisolles, and you can get just about anything you need without having to leave the town. Of course, with both Montauban and Toulouse easily accessible, this doesn't matter too much, but it's nice to know that there are days you can just walk into town and not have to get the car out. Grisolles is well equipped with schools, doctors, dentists, tradesmen and many other facilities too, making it a good place to put down roots if you are seeking a permanent home.
Grisolles has a very interesting art and folk museum, where you can not only discover much about the history and customs of the area, but also see a fascinating exhibition on the subject of 14th century cooking! The south-west of France is very proud of its gastronomic traditions, so don't let your interest wane after the historical aspect of this. Get yourself along to one of the very good restaurants that you will find both in and near Grisolles, and enjoy the present day cuisine which is rich in duck, goose and delicious haricot beans. Oh and don't forget the wine, you will see from the vineyards that dot the countryside that there are some local wines to try, and the reds especially are really very good.
The south-west of France in general is an area where sportsmen are well catered for, with many possibilities for finding a sport that suits your tastes and levels of fitness. Cyclists can be seen everywhere, and you can choose from heading off towards the Pyrénéan Mountains to the south-west, with their challenging slopes and echoes of the Tour de France, or you can enjoy gently rolling along the tow paths of the canal, where the terrain is blissfully flat for most of the time! Also available in the town are various sports clubs for tennis, swimming, football, rugby and more.
The area is rich in history as well as in fine food and wine, and it is well worth taking time to explore. The Albigensian crusades took place all around here, and there is a Knights Templar tradition too, with all its attendant myths and mysteries. Visit Toulouse, France's third city, where there is a cosmopolitan atmosphere and a proliferation of great shops and restaurants, as well as a university that keep the city vibrant and young. It is also possible to get to the ski resorts of the Pyrénées, or to the Mediterranean coast for a great day out or weekend away.
The international airport of Toulouse offers many choices of airlines and flights from various departure points in the UK, and is within easy reach of the town. These include British Airways, easyJet, bmi, Jet2 and flybe. The TGV provides another option for those who prefer to travel by rail, with stops at Toulouse and Agen. Roads in the region are excellent, and travel times are less than you would expect as there are few hold-ups on French auto routes. The A62 auto route runs close to Grisolles.
The Tarn-et-Garonne is a popular department for property buyers because of its excellent location, and property prices have risen sharply in recent years thanks to an increased interest in the area, especially from foreign buyers. Prices still bear comparison with other parts of the south, however, so don't be put off if you like the sound of the town or the surrounding area. Grisolles is cheaper than Toulouse and its immediate neighbours too, yet still has good access to the city.
