The pretty market town of Montech lies on the Canal de Garonne, which runs between Toulouse and Castets en Dorthe which is found in the Gironde department of Aquitaine. (The Canal de Garonne is a continuation of the Canal du Midi which runs from Toulouse to the Med.) With its cheerful centre and attractive surroundings, Montech is a popular mooring up point for holidaymakers cruising the canal in the summer months. Montech is also set close to many regional attractions and is conveniently located, offering easy access to Toulouse via the A62 auto route.
Montech is a vibrant little town, built for the most part in the typically Toulousain style of rose-coloured brick. Market day is Tuesday, and this is a great place to buy your fresh produce as well as local specialities. Montech is also well equipped with shops and services, and there is a good selection of restaurants where you can find a variety of cuisines ranging from the ever popular pizza to typical local fare such as cassoulet and duck confits.
The town's heritage sights include the 15th century church and the old town with its half-timbered houses of Toulouse brick. The canal also provides lovely walks along the towpath, and it is always interesting to stop at the locks to watch the Montech water slope in action, which is the system by which boats bypass the five locks which were once used here. For those who prefer more active pursuits, all the popular sports such as cycling, golf, tennis and swimming are easily found nearby.
There is certainly no shortage of places to go and things to do within reach of Montech. Canal cruising is always fun and a great way to discover the surrounding countryside and neighbouring towns, or you can hop into your car and zip down the auto route to explore the regional capital city of Toulouse, which is rich in heritage and also great for entertainment, shopping and dining. Montauban, even closer to home, is another well worth exploring, as is historic Castelsarrasin, while fans of heritage will love the Abbey of Moissac with its sculptures and statues.
Further afield you can take a day trip into the stunning mountains of the Pyrénées, where in winter you can participate in winter sports, or even head for the coast… Atlantic or Mediterranean, just take your pick!
