Saint Nicolas de la Grave - an ancient bastide town

Set in a dominant position gazing out over the stunning countryside of the Tarn et Garonne, St Nicolas de la Grave has much to offer. A small but dynamic town with all amenities, it's also packed with history and heritage. Ease of travel from the transport hub and regional capital city of Toulouse makes it an ideal spot to have a holiday home.

About town

The town is well equipped with shops, services and leisure facilities. You can find shops selling all your daily needs, and there's a very attractive old style street market held in the main square every Monday morning. The region is known as one of the great gastronomic areas of France, and there is no better place to buy the local produce than fresh from a farmer's market stall. St Nicolas de la Grave also offers some very good restaurants, perfect if you prefer someone else to do the cooking!

Heritage of Saint Nicolas de la Grave

The ancient bastide town of St Nicolas de la Grave has masses of history and plenty of heritage to discover. Probably its most outstanding feature is its imposing brick built chateau. It's said that it was in this chateau that Richard the Lionheart used to stay on his return from the crusades in the 12th century. In fact, the East Wing of the castle, built by Richard, is often known as The English Tower in his honour. Further buildings worthy of note include churches and chapels and the traditional market hall.

Visit the town's Cadillac Museum

And, for something completely different, there's the Cadillac Museum. Quite an unexpected feature in an old rural French town, this museum is dedicated to the explorer and founder of Detroit, Antoine de la Mothe-Cadillac. A great day out for the car lovers of this life!

Discover the leisure park or enjoy a round of golf

Holidays are a time for getting out and about and enjoying sports and leisure. And you'll find St Nicolas de la Grave is ideally placed to provide lots of opportunities to do just this. There's a fantastic Base des Loisirs - a leisure park - where you can swim, sunbathe, sail, birdwatch, fish and more! It's a perfect day out for all the family, and it's right on the doorstep! Golfers will find a choice of courses within reach, so don't forget the clubs.

Visit the great city of Toulouse

One of the beauties of this region is that there are so many wonderful places to explore. Less than an hour away is the great city of Toulouse, with its monumental heritage, tempting shops and distinctive pink-coloured buildings. A visit to Toulouse is not to be missed.

Explore historic Moissac and the market town of Valence d'Agen

Nearer to home is the historic village of Moissac, where you can see the Abbey of Saint Pierre with its acclaimed statues and sculptures. And, while you're there, take a minute to count the arms on the statue of Jesus - you might be in for a surprise! Valence d'Agen, a market town set on the banks of the Canal du Midi is also a lovely place to visit.

How to get there

With Toulouse and all its transport links just under an hour from the town, it's easy to get to the region by air, rail or road. Toulouse airport is served by many airlines and you can get budget flights direct from the UK too. The railway station is served by the superfast TGV.
