The market town of Fruges is located in the Pas de Calais, in the north of France. It's a lively town with excellent modern facilities, but it also has history and heritage. It is home to a war cemetery, and is within easy reach of the coast and many of the attractions of northern France. It is also easy to reach from the UK, being close to the port of Calais and the Channel Tunnel, making it an ideal location for a weekend or holiday home.

Fruges is a vibrant market town with a great range of shops and services. Here you can find all the usual small shops such as boulangeries, patisseries, tabacs and more alongside supermarkets for that big weekly shop. The market takes place on Saturday morning, so don't be late!

Services and activities available in Fruges

Fruges also has a range of restaurants, cafés and bars so you can enjoy the best of the local gastronomy. The modern sports and recreation centre has facilities for many sporting activities, and the town also offers access to horse-riding, fishing, football and many more activities through its clubs and youth programmes. Several schools are also found in the town, alongside doctors, dentists, vets and all necessities.

History and heritage of Fruges

Fruges has a history that dates back to the early Middle Ages, and there's quite a bit of heritage to discover. Take a look at the elegant Town Hall and the Gothic Revival Church of St Bertulphe, if you enjoy built heritage. There's a good museum in town, called the Abbot Delétoille Museum, where you can see an interesting collection of postcards, pewter artefacts, earthenware and arms. Visit the war cemetery, where there are graves of servicemen from both the World Wars. Finally, enjoy a leisurely a stroll down the lovely Avenue of Chestnut Trees.

Fruges also hosts fetes and festivals to celebrate its history and folklore. July and August are great times to enjoy these.

Attractions close by

Close to Fruges, in Achicourt, there are several interesting things to see. A couple of churches, an old windmill and remains of a 13th century castle are all worth a look if you enjoy seeing the patrimony of France. Not far away too, are many World War sites, monuments and cemeteries.

Enjoy seaside fun at Le Touquet

If you would prefer something a little more upbeat, and especially if you have children in tow, the lively seaside resort of Le Touquet is only a short drive away. There's a championship golf course there too, if golf is your game.

How to get there

If you want to fly, Paris Beauvais is the nearest major airport with Ryanair flights from the UK. Le Touquet airport is also an option, offering flights with Lydd Air. Probably the best way to travel to Fruges is by ferry or the Channel Tunnel though, as Calais is only 40 minutes away. Drivers will find Fruges on the D928. The nearest major road is the A26 auto route.

Property prices and availability in and around Fruges

The Fruges area is a really good place to find reasonably priced and often cheap property. It's great for weekends away being so near to England too! Current properties on the market begin at just 22,000 Euros for a building plot.
