Saint Pol sur Ternoise - an historic market town

The town of Saint Pol sur Ternoise is found on the banks of the Ternoise River, in the Pas de Calais department in the far north of France. It is a market town with an interesting history, and particularly notable for its British War Cemeteries. In fact, it was from Saint Pol that the journey of the Unknown Soldier to Westminster began in 1919. Meanwhile the countryside of the Canche Valley in which the town lies (or the land of the Seven Valleys, as the area is often called), is especially beautiful, and within reach of many of the region's best attractions.

Plenty of life in this town!

In spite of its greatest claims to fame being historical, modern Saint Pol has plenty of life about it, with an excellent range of thriving shops, services, sports and leisure facilities, bars and restaurants. There is even a micro brewery, with the Café de la Poste making its own beer! The Monday morning market is another part of town life, and one which is well worth discovering.

Activities on offer and sights to see

Saint Pol also has a very good open air swimming pool, a great way to cool off on a warm summer's day. The River Ternoise, which crosses the town, is another refreshing and attractive feature of the town, offering the chance for swimming, boating and fishing. Fishing permits should be available at the tabac in Saint Pol. Sights and monuments include the British War cemeteries, the Vimy Ridge War Memorial, and the remains of an ancient castle.

Out and about

The lovely countryside of the Seven Valleys is perfect for relaxing days out, picnicking, walking or just driving and enjoying the views. Many sports are available which also help to make the most of the tranquil countryside with walking, cycling and horse-riding being wonderful ways to explore in a leisurely fashion. If you want a little sophistication and a lively atmosphere, try a trip to the famous seaside resort of Le Touquet, also a place to find an acclaimed golf course, or go shopping in the port towns of Calais or the charming Boulogne.

Visit historical sites and botanical gardens

From the town of Saint Pol sur Ternoise you can visit the battlefields of the Somme and many other world war sites, plus places that go even further back in time, such as Agincourt. Then there are botanical gardens nearby, a farming museum in the town of Frévent, a motor racing circuit to visit and a castle, complete with moat and an acrobranche (tree sports) park at Fresincourt le Dolmen.

How to get there
