If that sounds like the ideal location for your French home, the little town of Néré in the Charente-Maritime could be perfect for you. Set in picturesque surroundings, with fields of sunflowers, neat vineyards and close to the Atlantic Ocean, Néré is peaceful and pretty. Yet it's also self sufficient, with excellent amenities.
The town is, in truth, somewhere between a small town and a village, with just under 750 inhabitants. But it has local shops, a supermarket and even a friendly bar and bistro to tempt you. If you need greater facilities, Aulnay is nearby with lots of shops and restaurants, street markets and an historic church. In fact, if historic churches interest you, little Néré has its own listed church, the Eglise Saint Pierre.
The Charente-Maritime has stunning, unspoilt countryside, and plenty of opportunities to get out and enjoy it. The quiet lanes and vineyards are perfect for riding or walking, and as much of the landscape is quite flat, it's good for cyclists too. The woods near Néré are lovely for walkers, with chances to spot wildlife as you go. Then there are rivers and lakes for swimming and boating, the seaside within an easy drive, and a great choice of golf courses in the region.
This part of western France is packed with fantastic places to see. You could begin near to home, with the charming market towns of Aulnay and Chef Boutonne. Or travel a little further afield and take a boat trip along the waterways of Green Venice. Perhaps a visit to a lively coastal resort like Royan appeals? Of course, there's lots of history and heritage to discover too, with Poitiers, the principal town of the region, being packed with interest. Cognac, famous for its superb brandy, is also well worth a visit.
The airports and TGV stations of La Rochelle and Poitiers make it easy to get to the area by air or rail. If you're driving, the A10 motorway runs close to Néré, which is found on the D130/D131/D133.
The Charente-Maritime, with its small towns like Néré, is sometimes said to be a fairly expensive part of Poitou-Charentes, but in 2012 and entering 2013, there are plenty of bargains to be had.
