The little town of Aigre is found amidst the softly picturesque countryside of the Charente department in western France, close to the famous town of Cognac. Aigre is typical of its area, attractive and unspoiled, and its weekly market is believed to be one of the best in the region. The town is an ideal place from which to explore Poitou-Charentes, as it lies within easy reach of all the major towns and attractions. The beautiful Atlantic coast is also accessible for day trips.
Aigre is well equipped to cater for all your everyday needs, and has all the usual amenities and services with schools, doctors, banks, garages, shops and supermarkets. The traditional style market, which sets up every week in the main square, is excellent, and puts on a wonderful display of local produce such as cheeses, fish, oysters (in season) and, of course, cognac.
Cognac is the local claim to fame, and Aigre has a long history of involvement in the production of this superb drink. Aigre also offers a number of delightful cafés and restaurants, where you can settle down to enjoy the excellent gastronomy for which the area is noted.
The Charente is a department that appears sleepy and rural on the surface, but where there is so much to see and do that you will never be bored. In and close to Aigre there are opportunities to take part in a wide variety of sports and leisure activities, with the gently rolling countryside being perfect for pursuits such as walking, cycling and horse-riding. The vineyards and sunflower fields make a glorious backdrop to any open air activity and can tempt even the most dedicated couch potato outdoors for at least a little gentle exercise.
Access to a car will allow you to really explore this lovely part of France. A trip to the town of Cognac is recommended, a stunning mediaeval town whose cobbled streets and elegant Renaissance houses will have you reaching for your camera. Here too you can visit the cognac distilleries to learn about the process by which this famous brandy type drink is made, and where you can buy a bottle to help you remember the experience.
The large town of Angoulême is packed with things to do, and is ideal for indulging in a little retail therapy too. Heading for the coast is another option, where you can find the vibrant harbour town of La Rochelle which will never disappoint.
If you want to travel by air to the Charente, the airports of Poitiers and Limoges are within easy reach and both are served by budget airline Ryanair. The super fast TGV train will take you straight to Angoulême from Paris, or you can drive to Aigre which lies not far off the N10.
Prices in the area are a bit of a mixed bag, with certain areas becoming fairly pricey due to Parisians seeking second homes in the peaceful Charente countryside. However, there is plenty of bargain property too, especially in and around little towns such as Aigre, which also have a good number of renovation properties still available.
