Bonnes - on the banks of the Dronne River

Bonnes is a picturesque little village lying on the banks of the Dronne River in the Charente. It's a perfect retreat into the peace of rural France, but close to plenty of larger towns and the many attractions of this well-loved region. There's plenty of sunshine to be found here too, with the Charente benefiting from one of the country's best sunshine records. What's more, it's easy to reach from the UK, with a great choice of airports offering budget flights, TGV stations and great road networks nearby.

Amenities on offer in the village

With its population of less than 400, Bonnes is a small village without doubt. But it's got a handful of cafés and shops, including the essential boulangeries for delicious French breads and pastries. And anyway, it only takes a few minutes to reach the supermarkets and choice of shops and restaurants in nearby towns like Riberac. Riberac has an excellent street market to visit too.

Heritage to discover

Bonnes, with a history going back into the Middle Ages, also has some heritage worth seeing. There's a chateau, a church and an ancient windmill to explore. The natural heritage is lovely too, with the beautiful River Dronne flowing alongside the village and a bucolic countryside surrounding.

Relax at the beach, play golf and go wine tasting

Poitou-Charentes is a fun-packed region, with attractions for all ages within easy reach. Close to Bonnes, Aubeterre and Saint Aubin both offer river beaches, great for family days out, swimming and relaxing. Activities such as tennis, fishing, horse-riding and golf are all also found near Bonnes. A little further afield you can visit the top rated theme park of Futuroscope, at Poitiers, or go south into the Dordogne to enjoy the stunning landscapes that make this part of France so popular. It's a big wine region too, so be sure to visit wine towns like Bergerac and Bordeaux, where wine tasting days and vineyard visits are on offer.

How to get there

There are several airports you might choose to fly into to reach Bonnes. Bordeaux, Bergerac, Limoges and Brive are all easily accessible, while La Rochelle offers a further possibility. Bergerac, Limoges and Bordeaux all have TGV stations too, as does Angoulême, making train travel from the UK fast and straightforward. Finally, drivers will find Bonnes located on the D17. The nearest major roads are the A89 and E606.
