Cellefrouin village

The little village of Cellefrouin is found in the picturesque Charente department of Poitou-Charentes. Cellefrouin is tiny, having only just over 500 inhabitants, but it has history and heritage. And it's set in a great location for enjoying many of the best bits of western France.

Sights and heritage in Cellefrouin

There may not be much in the village in terms of shopping or nightlife, but Cellefrouin does have a long history and a heritage of which it is rather proud. Among its sights are the old abbey church, which dates to the 11th century, and the romantically named Lanterns of the Dead. The latter are small illuminated towers placed at the entrance of a cemetery to mark the spot. The Cellefrouin tower is said to be perhaps the most perfect example in France. The cemetery is worth discovering too. Meanwhile, the village also has a couple of beautiful fountains and several original buildings.

Shops and amenities can be found close by

Shops and supermarkets can easily be accessed close to Cellefrouin in the nearby town of Champagne Mouton. This delightful market town has a good range of shops and services, in addition to the twice weekly (Tuesdays and Fridays) markets. Larger towns such as Angouleme and Ruffec have supermarkets, builders' merchants and many more amenities.

Vegetarian dining in Cellefrouin!

It can be very hard for vegetarians to find suitable restaurants in meat loving rural France, but Cellefrouin has a really great one. Under The Lime Tree is a small hotel with a vegetarian restaurant which even offers meals for vegans, something many Brits will be very pleased to find.
