For buying and selling property in Charmé
Charmé is a traditional little village, quiet and rural, set in the pretty landscapes of the Charente department of Poitou-Charentes in western France. The village has plenty of charm, just like its name, but it is essentially a tranquil little community, hidden in the countryside. That said, just ten minutes away is the bustling market town of Ruffec, with all amenities to hand.
Small it may be, but Charmé has its share of interesting old buildings, most built from the local limestone and presenting a very typically Charantaise picture. Of the village's built heritage, several houses are from the 15th and 16th centuries. There is an old lavoir, or communal wash house, a late mediaeval tower and a parish church which dates to the 17th century.
Most of your shopping, should you be living or staying in Charmé, will probably be done in nearby Ruffec (which also has a great market held three times a week on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays), although you can find a nice little boulangerie and a post office within the village itself.
The countryside of the region is a treasure trove for fans of the active life, and whether you like the idea of swimming in pools, leisure lakes or perhaps rivers, boating, walking, horse-riding or golf, you will have no problem pursuing your chosen hobby.
Poitou-Charentes has a wealth of things to do and places to go. Just over the departmental border into the Vienne is the fabulous city of Poitiers, with its theme park of Futuroscope, a wonderful Monkey Park and so much more. Ruffec, with its markets, shops and restaurants is always a good place to be, while many other lively market towns can be explored in the vicinity too.
Angoulême, capital of the Charente department, is packed with interesting things to see in its historic centre, and has lots of more modern pleasures in the shape of bars, restaurants and shops. The Charente also borders the Dordogne, famed for its stunning scenery, quaint bastide towns and its thriving ex-pat community.
Poitiers has both an airport and a TGV station, so it is easy to travel from the UK to the area. Poitiers airport is served by Ryanair. Angoulême also has a TGV station, making rail travel a really good option. Ruffec, only a ten-minute drive from Charmé, has a station with linking trains from Poitiers. Drivers can find the village on the D736, close to the N10 non toll motorway.
Poitou-Charentes is a region which still offers some very good properties for very low prices. Keep away from the main cities and best known tourist sports and in little villages like Charmé, you will have a great chance of finding a real bargain.
