The village of Chassiecq, which is found in the tranquil rural landscapes of the Charente department in western France, is full of Charentaise charm. The picturesque houses are built of mellow local stone, and their red tiled roofs, typical of western France, add warmth and colour to the picture. All of this is further enhanced by the surroundings of brilliant sunflower fields, rolling wheat and corn fields and cool woodlands and lakes. Chassiecq is a place in which you can relax, breathe and recharge.
Tranquillity is the order of the day in Chassiecq, with little traffic, no rush hour to contend with and very little to worry about. Life here beats to the rhythm of the seasons rather than the dictates of modern life in the UK, and it makes a very refreshing change. Good shops and restaurants are easily found in the nearby towns and villages, many of which also host traditional French markets which are one of the great joys of being in France. Champagne Mouton, just a few minutes away, has a lovely market on Tuesdays and Thursdays plus a handful of small shops and services, while Ruffec is the place to head for to find larger shops and facilities.
There is so much to do in this region that you will want to stay for ever. The great beaches and resorts of the Charente-Maritime are just an hour away, while closer to home you can find lovely lakes and rivers for water sports and swimming. The countryside, gentle and calm, is tailor made for walking, cycling and horse-riding, while golfers will find plenty of chances to get their fix of their favourite sport without having to travel too far.
Spend some time in Poitiers, which has a wonderful heritage as well as all modern facilities and entertainment, and pay a visit to its excellent educational theme park Futuroscope. Animal lovers will adore the superb Monkey Park nearby too, while adrenaline junkies can enjoy quad biking for a real white knuckle ride.
The city of Cognac, famed for its brandy, is also worth a visit, and offers the chance to explore the vineyards and brandy houses to see how this prestigious drink is made. Even just walking or driving around the area is a joy, as the many tiny hamlets offer a glimpse of a truly traditional way of life that has sadly disappeared for most of us.
You can fly with Ryanair to Poitiers or Limoges for a low cost and easy way to reach the area. Limoges is also served by Flybe. Poitiers has a TGV station too, which links to a local service to Ruffec. If you are driving, the village of Chassiecq is found on the D172. The nearest major road is the N10.
Property around Chassiecq can often be found at surprisingly low prices, with renovation projects still available for those who want to snap up a real bargain and create their own perfect dream home. At the time of writing (2011) these start at 33,000 Euros.
