For buying and selling property in Courcôme
There's something special about a truly ancient place. And, Courcôme, with documented roots in the year 970, certainly qualifies as ancient. But there's more to it than antiquity. It lies in beautiful countryside, has a lively community and useful local amenities. And being in the Charente, it's close to lots of great places to go and exciting things to do.
All too often, tiny French villages can seem like ghost towns. You know people live there, but a complete absence of amenities can make it hard to see just how they manage. So, if you're looking for the peace and authenticity of an ancient and tiny village, yet need access to shops, services and a little community spirit, you can have your work cut out. But not if you happen upon Courcôme. With fewer than 500 residents, it's inarguably small. Being rural, it's also peaceful. What may come as a pleasant surprise though, is that Courcôme has amenities.
The village has a boulangerie, plus regular visits from mobile butchers, grocers, oyster sellers and a dairy products shop. There's a bar/restaurant too, helping to foster a community feel. If you've got little ones, the village school is a friendly introduction to French life for them. Then there are community events to get involved in. Courcôme may be ancient, but it's a real, living village in 2013! It's also good to know that nearby Ruffec caters for all other needs, with shops, supermarkets, schools, hotels, restaurants and a great market.
Being as old as it is, you'd expect this little village to have some interesting heritage. And it doesn't disappoint. The Church of Notre Dame is a classified historical monument. The cemetery chapel is also fascinating, with painted murals to see. And, just outside the village there's a dolmen and a megalith. Now, that's some pretty ancient heritage!
There are several lovely walks around the village, so if gentle exercise is your thing, it's ideal. But if you prefer to do a little more, you don't have to travel far. Why not screw your courage to the sticking post and have a go at "The Spider Trail in the Trees"? It's a tree climbing park that will have you climbing and flying down zip wires high above the ground - great fun for the adventurous and young at heart! If you still fancy being high up to get a good view of the area but prefer for someone else to do the work, you might enjoy a microlight flight. It's all possible! Of course, you can also find easy access to golf, horse-riding, fishing, swimming, tennis and all the usual activities associated with the outdoor life.
The Charente is a very popular department. And, for good reason. There are so many interesting places to visit, for one thing. Just on the doorstep is the market town of Ruffec. Always lively and colourful, Ruffec has everything you could need for day to day life, plus plenty to see and do. Then of course, there's the regional capital of Poitiers with the Futuroscope theme park, nearby Monkey Valley and so much more. The city of Angoulême has lots to offer too. And you can even get across to the lovely Atlantic coast of Poitou-Charentes where there are lively resorts and beautiful islands to discover.
Flying will get you to Poitiers or Limoges, and both cities have TGV stations too, for those who prefer the train. Angoulême also has a TGV stop. The nearby town of Ruffec offers rail links to Poitiers. Drivers can find the village on the D736, not far from the N10 non toll motorway.
The Charente and the area around Courcôme often offer great property bargains. They are popular, but prices have never reached the excessive prices seen in some parts of France. And, in 2013, sellers have become more realistic about pricing, so make the most of it.
