The little village is Empuré, in the Charente department of Poitou-Charentes, is a picturesque old village which lies in the heart of rural Charente. Surrounded by rolling fields of wheat and other crops, Empuré is a peaceful haven away from the hustle and bustle of life, yet still close to all the region's main attractions and easily accessed from the UK.
If you are looking for supermarkets and nightclubs, look elsewhere, as Empuré will not be of interest to you. This is a place to relax, to soak up the atmosphere and gentle pace of rural life rather than to dash around the shops and dress in the latest fashions. However, you will need to shop, and fortunately you will only have to travel a few minutes to the neighbouring towns of Villefagnan and Ruffec to find plenty of shops, bars and restaurants to enjoy.
Small and tranquil it may be, but Empuré has its claims to fame in the shape of some historic buildings. Its church, the Eglise Saint Maixent, is a listed monument, while others of note include a chateau and a 16th century town hall.
The Charente is particularly rich in things to see and do, and is a wonderful destination for families with children of any age. Popular attractions within easy reach of Empuré include a Monkey Park, the Futuroscope educational theme park at Poitiers, leisure lakes and a wealth of outdoor activities. Golf, horse-riding, swimming, cycling and walking are all locally available, while the beaches and resorts of the Charente-Maritime are under an hour away.
Poitiers is a lovely city to visit, while Cognac with its vineyards and famous brandy is another to add to the itinerary. The department is also home to the village of Aubeterre sur Dronne, one of the officially recognised most beautiful villages in France, which is well worth a visit.
You can fly with Ryanair to Poitiers for a low cost and easy way to reach the area. Limoges and La Rochelle airports are also within reach. Poitiers also has a TGV station which links to a local service to Ruffec. If you are driving, the village of Empuré is found on the D740/D303, not far from the N10.
In spite of the massive popularity of the Charente with foreign buyers, it is still possible to pick up a real bargain in the department. Prices are generally very reasonable, even cheap in the lesser known villages such as Empuré. If you are happy to take on the renovation work, you can even find a property here with great potential for only 28,000 Euros at the time of writing (2011)!
