For buying and selling property in Genac
Poitou-Charentes is a beautiful, largely agricultural region that lies along the west of France. Known for its stunning yet gentle landscapes of sunflowers, lakes and forests, the region is popular with all who love La France Profonde. It's also noted for the lovely, traditional and unspoilt villages and hamlets that punctuate the countryside. Genac is one of many similar villages found in this region. Picturesque and peaceful, it offers a chance to escape the pressures of life in the UK while remaining in touch with the amenities of larger nearby towns.
As Genac's history began back in Roman times, the village has a good deal of history and heritage. The site was occupied initially by the Romans, who named the village Gainacum. The Middle Ages saw a rise in status for Genac, where the local land owners had many fiefs dependent on the land. The heritage is not one of grand houses, but there are some interesting remnants of various periods of the village's history still to see in Genac. There are a couple of fountains, a lovely dovecote, a plaque that reads: "Vive l'année agriculturel 1820", and an elegant town hall to discover. The village church is also worth seeing as it dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries and incorporates late Roman features and early Gothic.
There isn't a lot in Genac, in terms of shops and restaurants, but the village does have a general store, a bar and a post office. There's also a primary school and a number of services offered by local tradesmen. Nearby and with much more in the way of shopping and dining opportunities, is the market town of Rouillac, just five minutes away. Between Genac and other small neighbouring villages various sports facilities can be accessed. Football, petanque, tennis and a leisure centre are all close to hand. Golfers will find courses at Cognac and Angoulême, around 30 minutes by car, while other sporting and leisure activities in the area include fishing, walking and lake swimming.
In spite of its rural nature, the Charente and the wider region have almost more enjoyable things to do and places to see than any other region of France. From the theme park of Futuroscope at Poitiers to a delightful Monkey Park, all ages will find themselves thoroughly entertained. Visitors can take in a trip around the famous Cognac houses and vineyards, or staying close to Genac, a tour of the Gallo Roman amphitheatre at Les Bouchauds is always interesting. City days spent getting to know Angoulême and Poitiers are always days well spent. You can pop over the border into the Limousin to see the tragic martyr village of Oradour sur Glanes, or even take a drive to the coast.
The airports of Poitiers, Limoges and La Rochelle are all within reach. Poitiers is currently served by Ryanair; Limoges by Ryanair and Flybe; and La Rochelle by easyJet, Ryanair, Jet2 and Flybe. Though as airlines tend to change schedules and routes, it is always best to check directly with them for up to date advice. Both Poitiers and Limoges, and Angoulême too, have TGV stations for rail travel should you prefer. (Angoulême has an airport too, but currently does not offer direct services to/from the UK.) Finally, if you're driving, look for the village from the D117/D118 and the D19 roads. The nearest major roads are the N10 and N141.
The Charente often serves up some excellent property bargains, especially in little known villages like Genac. The surrounding countryside also has some opportunities to find beautiful longères and unique premier properties.
