The town of Jarnac lies in the west of France in the Charente department. It lines the banks of the Charente River which runs through the town, and benefits from a moderate climate with a good deal of sunshine (it is said second only to the French Riviera). Meanwhile the surrounding countryside is filled with villages, farms and churches, not to mention Cognac vineyards. The area has a rich historical past, and is well worth exploring.
Jarnac is also the birthplace of François Mitterrand, one of France's greatest presidents and most famous figures. A museum in Jarnac has an interesting collection of gifts, which were given to the President during his term in office. You can find these, among other exhibitions and facilities at L'Espace Culturel de l'Orangerie. Jarnac is also famous for being the home of one of the finest brandies, as the Courvoisier Cognac house operates from a base in a fabulous chateau in the town.
The town of Jarnac is a typical Charente market town... except for its affiliation with the finest Cognacs and chocolates in France! Jarnac is an amalgamation of old and new, and retains traditional customs such as the daily fresh food market alongside a lively modern and a commercial life. Most facilities needed for a comfortable life are available in Jarnac, with the larger towns of Angoulême and Cognac within easy reach too.
The tourist office offers guided tours of the town in high season, and these give you a pretty good look at the important cultural and historical parts of Jarnac. There are numerous art festivals and exhibitions, and also usually artists in residence in the town as the Maire is keen to maintain the artistic side of life!
The town celebrates its excellent chocolate making traditions with a chocolate festival in October so all lovers of the sweet stuff should make every effort to attend this delightful event! You can also take tours of the Cognac houses, of the brandy barrel makers and the vineyards which grow the grapes used to make Cognac. These are both educational and very pleasant, as they usually includes a certain amount of tasting!
Jarnac offers access to lots of different sporting activities, so take your pick from golf, tennis, horse-riding, walking, cycling and fishing. The River Charente, which runs through the town, also offers the chance to try kayaking and canoeing, or if you prefer a more tranquil activity then you can hire a cruiser and take life at you own pace. You may also like to explore the magnificent Romanesque churches and chateaux found in Jarnac as well as in towns in the vicinity.
To reach Jarnac by air you can fly to Poitiers or La Rochelle. Poitiers is served by Ryanair and La Rochelle by Ryanair, flybe and easyJet. It is also possible to travel by train, with the Eurostar taking you to Paris, then the TGV to Poitiers. Angoulême also has a train station.
The Charente is popular with both Parisian second home owners and also with the foreign property market, so prices can be higher than in other departments.
