The town of Montbron that lies in the Charente department of the Poitou-Charentes region in the west of France, is a lovely market town that is also noted for its castle and old ramparts. Not only is the town historic and attractive, the countryside in which it lies is nothing less than glorious, and variously described as being reminiscent of Tuscany and even Switzerland!
Because of its history, its castle, ramparts and historic streets and houses, there is plenty of interest in Montbron for lovers of the old France, the France of days gone by. There is also, however, plenty to interest those who are seeking the pleasures offered by a more modern France too, including modern amenities to make everyday life a pleasure, such as easy access to banks, shops, health care and suchlike.
Market day in the town is Saturday, and as ever in France, market day means a frisson of excitement comes to town, so whatever you do, don't miss this colourful and quintessentially French event. Look for local goodies such as honey, pineau, Cognac, foie gras and other "produits regional".
Montbron isn't a particularly large town, but is does have some very good restaurants where you can relax and enjoy the delicious cuisine of the region. If you just fancy stopping for a glass or two of Cognac you can also find several decent little bars, with a very convivial atmosphere.
There's a good variety of sporting activities in and near Montbron, with the excellent golf course being a notable example.
