The pretty little village of Montemboeuf is located in the Charente department of Poitou-Charentes, in the west of France. Typically Charantaise, with picturesque old houses and a peaceful, rural atmosphere, the village is set in lovely countryside where the principle activity is farming. Montemboeuf is quiet and rural, yet near to large towns and attractions, making it a lovely place to base yourself for holidays or to settle down to a calmer lifestyle.
The heritage of the village includes a church and a couple of chapels (one with a Maltese cross and the graves of the important families of the village), an old "chemin de fer" (railroad) and a Gallo Roman way. And despite its small population, Montemboeuf offers a bakery, a grocery, a butcher's shop and a drug/hardware store. There is also a post office, dentist and a bank, as well as a lovely open air swimming pool and paddling pool which operate during the summer months. (The water is usually lovely and warm with additional heating provided by solar power.) Further shops and services can be found in neighbouring towns. There is an elementary school, allowing young children to be educated in a small and friendly environment close to home.
Getting out and about offers a rich choice of places to go and things to do. There are some lovely walking trails in the area, taking in local monuments and neighbouring villages, and also plenty of sporting activities within reach including golf, horse-riding, leisure lakes for swimming and fishing and more.
Nearby Angoulême provides plenty of shopping and dining, as does the fascinating historic capital city of Poitiers. Attractions in the region include a delightful Monkey Park (la Vallée des Singes) and the Poitiers educational theme park of Futuroscope is excellent. Closer to home, visit Le Rochefoucauld with its chateau and extensive heritage, or enjoy the bustling market in Chasseneuil sur Bonnieure.
Sadly, the very useful airport in Angoulême no longer has direct flights from the UK after Ryanair pulled out, but there is no real problem as the airports of Limoges and Poitiers are easily accessed from Montemboeuf. Limoges is served by Ryanair and Flybe, while Poitiers is served by Ryanair. Poitiers also has a TGV station, as does Angoulême, making rail travel easy. Drivers will find the town from the N141 and D13.
Take a look at what you can get for your money around Montemboeuf and you will be very pleasantly surprised. From a village house needing finishing touches at 75,000 Euros to a five-bedroom manor house with a cottage, barn and garden for just over 158,000 Euros... what's not to like?
