For buying and selling property in Montmoreau Saint Cybard
The pretty town of Montmoreau St Cybard, which is found nestling in the picturesque limestone valleys and woodlands of the Charente department of western France, is overlooked by its very own 15th century castle, an edifice which defines this sleepy, unspoiled little town. Sadly, it is not currently possible to enter the castle, but it imparts a definite sense of history to Montmoreau.
As well as the castle, Montmoreau boasts a rather nice church, the Church of Saint Denis. Even if you are not really a connoisseur of churches, this one is quite appealing to look at, with its unusual carvings of lions' heads, its multi-foil portal, and other striking features. You can gain access to the interior without any problems. There is also a 12th century Romanesque chapel in the town which has some interesting designs and artefacts, and is also usually open for visitors.
That's about it in the way of tourist attractions in the town itself (although there are many places of interest nearby), but this is actually a blessing in disguise, as it means that Montmoreau St Cybard remains unsullied by the extremes of tourism that have adversely affected certain towns in western France.
Sleepy it may be, and historic too, but Montmoreau is a town where it is also possible to live a comfortable real life in the modern world. It offers a good range of basic services and shops, with even a very pleasant restaurant too, meaning that you don't always have to go far away if you just want to treat yourself to a relaxing evening out.
The region has lots to offer, both in terms of places to visit and also lots of leisure and sporting activities. The Charente is a great place to be if you have family, as children love visiting the superb theme parks of the region, such as the wonderful and educational Futuroscope attraction, just to the north in Poitiers. It's also a great place to be because the sunny climate and open countryside positively encourage all manner of sporting activities. Around Montmoreau you can play tennis, swim, fish or canoe in the abundant lakes and rivers, or walk, cycle or horse ride along the picturesque trails that wend their way through the woodland and fields. Finally, if you are a brandy drinker don't pass up the opportunity to visit Cognac and try the famously fiery drink for yourself, in its own home town.
If you want to travel by air you can fly to Poitiers or La Rochelle. Poitiers is served by Ryanair and La Rochelle by Ryanair, flybe and easyJet. It is also possible to travel by train, with the Eurostar taking you to Paris, then the TGV to Poitiers. Angoulême also has a train station which is very useful for accessing Montmoreau. Drivers will find the town from the D674.
The Charente is popular with both Parisian second home owners and also with the foreign property market, so property tends to be more expensive here than in the other departments of the Poitou-Charentes region. It is still often possible to find a suitable property for a renovation project, though, and prices are nowhere near being so high that further gains are not possible. There is a wide variety of property types here, and many have interesting period features and attractive regional characteristics.
