The little village of Saint Maurice des Lions is a peaceful, rural place set amid the gentle rolling countryside of the Charente department. It's an ideal retreat from the stress of modern life, yet close to larger towns and tourist attractions. It's also just half an hour from Limoges airport, so weekend breaks are always possible.
The way of life is sleepy and seemingly little altered from 100 years ago. There is a boulangerie, where you can pick up those French essentials like baguettes and croissants, plus a small general shop, a hairdressers and a post office, but for more serious shopping you'll need to take the car and go to the nearby market town of Confolens, where you'll find everything you need.
You can still see the remains of one of the three granite lions that gave the village its name, but it's not much of a lion these days! The village church is lovely, and worth a look as it's a classified historical monument. Also, there's a pretty little chapel, the Chapel of Castle Rhus.
A visit to the market town of Confolens is a must. The vibrant market takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Confolens is also great for fishing in the River Goire. Travelling a little further afield, there are so many places to discover and attractions to enjoy, you will never be at a loss. Angoulême, Poitiers, Cognac and Limoges are all wonderful cities offering lots to see and do. Visits to attractions like the Futuroscope theme park are essential items on the agenda, especially if you have kids in tow. Then there is the simple enjoyment of life in the French countryside. There is walking, fishing, swimming, cycling, and even golf at St Junien.
You can travel by air, or rail (TGV) to Limoges or Poitiers. If driving, the road to look for if driving is the D948. The nearest major road is the N141, while the nearest ferry port is that of Saint Malo.
Poitou-Charentes generally is known for its low property prices, so Saint Maurice des Lions is a good place to start searching for a bargain. You'll be amazed at just how much property and land you can get for your money, especially when compared with prices of similar properties in the UK!
