Valence - a peaceful country village

If your dream is to settle in a pretty little village in the peace of the French countryside, yet still find tourist attractions, leisure activities, shops and services within easy reach, then the village of Valence in the Charente could be just the place for you. The village nestles into its picturesque surroundings, on the bank of the River Son-Sonnette and offers a tranquil retreat while retaining a strong community spirit.

Shops and services found close by

Valence is small, and not the place to go seeking a rip-roaring nightlife… but it does have its own Salle des Fetes where village events are organised and held. There's also a village primary school, handy for the little ones, although older kids need to hop on the bus to nearby Mansle. You won't find supermarkets in Valence either, but there's no need to worry. You can find everything you need in Mansle, which has a couple of supermarkets, plenty of small shops and services and also a traditional market on Tuesdays and Fridays. The village also has some historic buildings, with part of the Parish Church of Saint Pierre being a listed monument. Nearby is another monument, the Château Bougon, and a rural monument, the Mill of Bougon.

Enjoy walking, cycling and canoeing in the great outdoors!

There can hardly be a better location for those who love the great outdoors than the Charente. The gentle bucolic countryside is ideal for walkers, cyclists and horse-riders. Canoeing is possible on local waterways, while there are leisure lakes in the vicinity where you can swim, relax and boat. In July, neighbouring Mansle has a great dance festival, so why not join in?

Explore historic cities, charming towns and Futuroscope

Poitou-Charentes has endless opportunities for enjoying great days out with the family. The market town of Angoulême is always buzzing, while the main city of Poitiers is packed with interesting things to see and do. If you've got kids in tow, don't miss out on a visit to the fabulous educational theme park of Futuroscope. Confolens, a town of "art and history", is also well worth a visit. Then you might enjoy a wander around a monkey park too, or a day at the seaside in the Charente-Maritime. The choice is all yours.

How to get to Valence

One of the attractions of the Charente is that it's so easy to reach from the UK. Poitiers and Limoges both have budget flights coming in regularly and also both have TGV stations, as does Angoulême. If travelling by train, you can connect to local services to the nearby town of Ruffec. And if you're driving, the village is found near the N10 and N141 motorways, on the D15.
