Unassuming yet pretty, the village of Vouzan is made up of two parts. There's Le Vieux Vouzan, the older part of the village where you'll find a lovely chateau and an old church, and Le Nouveau Vouzan, home to an impressive town hall, a school and a more modern church. It lies in rural surroundings, with woodlands and farmland all around.
Vouzan is essentially small and sleepy. It's the epitome of a rural French community, so don't expect bright lights and a stressful, fast paced lifestyle. But then it's the ideal place to escape from all that! The pleasures of living in Vouzan are more about clean fresh air, dappled sunlight through the trees, glimpses of lovely old buildings and peace, perfect peace. But, if you do want an occasional taste of city life, Angoulême with all its amenities is just a short drive away. More locally, just down the road, is the village of Sers, where you'll find a boulangerie, a small but useful general grocer's, and a little bar where you can get to know the locals, if your French is up to it!
The village is certainly small, but it's far from insignificant in terms of heritage. From Gallo Roman remains to the fairy-tale chateau with its square pigeonnier, Vouzan is historical and fascinating. In the old part of the village, in addition to the 15th century chateau, there's a church and a lovely old lavoir to be seen. The newer part of Vouzan offers an elegant town hall and another lavoir at the foot of the bridge.
There's no getting away from the fact that you will have to leave the village if you need to get to supermarkets and tourist attractions. But that's no problem, there are plenty of great places to get to within easy reach. The market town of Villebois Lavalette, with its stunning covered market hall, is buzzing on Saturday mornings when the market gets into swing. There's even a supermarket there, though the little town is so beautiful you won't want to spend too much time shopping. Angoulême is easy to access, and has lots of shops, restaurants and historical interest. Poitiers and Limoges are also within a reasonable drive for days out, and if you've got kids in tow you won't want to miss a visit to the theme park of Futuroscope.
If your idea of fun is more centred on being active, there are loads of sports like golf, walking, cycling, swimming, tennis, river and lake sports and other ways to burn off some energy nearby.
You can travel by air or rail (TGV) to Bergerac, Limoges or Poitiers. Angoulême has the nearest TGV station for rail travellers, although you could choose to travel to Limoges or Poitiers instead and take in a bit of sightseeing en-route. The nearest major road is the D939, and from here you can find the village on the D108/D412. Finally, if you enjoy the sea crossing from the UK, the nearest ferry port is that of Saint Malo.
The region of Poitou-Charentes is well known for its reasonable property prices, which has to be good news in these cash strapped times. Interesting fact: Vouzan is actually two hamlets, Le Vieux Vouzan and Le Nouvelle Vouzan, rather than one centralised village.
