Argenton les Vallées is a great little place to find a property in an attractive part of the Deux Sèvres. The town is small and authentic, yet offers all everyday amenities. And it's got easy access to the larger town of Bressuire for more shopping and restaurants. Its pretty lake is an added attraction, offering leisure facilities and a restaurant for balmy summer days and evenings out.
The town dates back to mediaeval times. Its heritage includes the ruins of the castle, the ancient Bridge of Cadoret, the Church of Saint Gilles (a classified historical monument), the chapel of the old castle and a windmill.
In town you'll find a good sized supermarket and local shops and services including bakers, chemists, hairdressers, banks, a petrol station and medical and dental practitioners. The town has a small market held on Thursday mornings, but there's a much larger market held in neighbouring Bressuire on Tuesdays.
Argenton les Vallées has a great outdoor swimming pool, and also a lovely leisure lake on the edge of town. At the lake you can enjoy various water sports and then relax in the friendly bar/restaurant afterwards. There's also a lakeside beach for sunbathing and a children's playground. The surrounding area offers the chance to enjoy walking, horse-riding, fishing and golf.
The Poitou-Charentes region is richly packed with things to do and places to see. Take a boat trip along the tree-lined canals of the Marais Poitevin, known as the Green Venice, or spend a day exploring the Deux Sèvres' departmental capital of Niort. Going a little further away from the town, Poitiers is a great city to visit, whether you go for the heritage of the historical quarter, the theme park of Futuroscope or the shopping and dining. Also in the region, you can take time to discover hundreds of varieties of monkeys roaming almost free in the Vallée des Singes.
Choices of airports for arriving in the area include Nantes, Poitiers, Tours and La Rochelle. If you prefer rail travel the easiest thing to do is to take the TGV from Paris to Poitiers. Finally, drivers can find Argenton les Vallées on the D748 or D759, near to the N149.
