The village lies in a delightful location on the banks of the River Boutonne and beside the Chizé Forest, where fascinating wildlife and flora can be seen. It's a little village, rural and peaceful, yet it is close to plenty of attractions and activities, so it makes an ideal holiday spot or base for a new life in France.
Chizé has a population of less than 1,000, but it does offer some handy local shops and services. In the village there's a boulangerie, post office, a hairdresser's, and a pharmacy. There are also medical and dental services and schools for younger children. A market comes to Chizé every third Wednesday, with an appetising array of local goods and specialities on sale. A greater range of shops and services can be accessed nearby in the market town of Aulnay, just a fifteen-minute drive away.
Chizé has a wonderful natural heritage thanks to its forest. Home to the animal park of Zoodyssée, one of the biggest animal parks in Europe, the wildlife of the forest has led to an important biological study centre being set up there too. Chizé also has the remains of a mediaeval castle.
The Deux-Sèvres and the surrounding region have something to appeal to everyone. The Poitevin Marshes, with their sleepy canals, are fascinating to explore by boat. Then for something a little different and very specific to the area, brandy lovers will lap up a visit to the Hennessy Museum and the town of Cognac. Even a trip to the seaside isn't out of the question. The Atlantic coast of France is well within reach for day trips, and it is here that you can find the vibrant seaside resort of La Rochelle, with its beaches, harbour and shops and entertainment.
For those who like to get outdoors and active, Chizé is set near to great walking trails, and lakes and rivers for fishing and water sports. No less than three golf courses are accessible within 50 kilometres.
The airports and railway stations of Poitiers and La Rochelle are the closest, though Nantes and Angers are also possible choices for travelling to the area from the UK. The nearest ferry port is that of St Malo. If you're driving, you'll find Chizé close to the A10 motorway.
