Ménigoute is a small but well-appointed village that's found in the Deux-Sèvres department of Poitou-Charentes. Lying on the banks of the River Vonne, the village is attractive and welcoming, with good local amenities. Its setting is lovely, with an abundance of woodland and pastureland surrounding it, yet it's within easy reach of major attractions like Poitiers and also the Atlantic coast.
Ménigoute may be quite small and rural, but it's got a good complement of useful shops and amenities. Within the village you can find a small supermarket, a pharmacy, bakers and patisseries and a bank. In addition there is a hotel, restaurant and a bar/tabac. Doctors and dentists are also on hand in Ménigoute. Larger shops and supermarkets and a greater choice of restaurants are easily accessed in nearby towns such as St Maixent de L'Ecole, just twenty minutes away.
Ménigoute is an old and very typically Charantaise village. The heritage includes a "Lantern of the Dead" monument, the Chapel of Jean Boucard, an Abbey and a cross that's a listed historic monument. A couple of chateaux can also be seen.
Ménigoute makes a great base for anyone who loves the great outdoors. The peaceful and unspoiled countryside in which it is set offers endless possibilities for outdoor activities such as walking, horse-riding and fishing. Golfers will be delighted to find the excellent Golf des Forges only a few kilometres away.
The village is also well situated for further exploration of this ever popular area. Places that you might like to add to your list of where to go and what to do could include La Rochelle, where the lively atmosphere of a bustling seaside town awaits you. There are many resorts along the Poitou-Charentes coast that are only an hour's drive away, so sun-soaked days on the beach are always an option.
Inland, and closer to home, you could take time to discover lovely market towns and picturesque villages, each with its own distinctive character. A near neighbour to Ménigoute is the Sheep Village, Vasles, where speciality sheep are bred. Parthenay is famed for its beef cattle. Meanwhile the city of Poitiers, with a rich heritage and the added attraction of the Futuroscope theme park, is within an easy drive of Ménigoute.
Poitiers is the nearest airport, though La Rochelle is also an option. The TGV also runs to both cities. The ferry port of Calais is just under a seven hour drive, with St Malo being nearer but offering less choice of ferries. Finally, drivers will find Ménigoute on the D21. The nearest major road is the A10.
Property prices in Poitou-Charentes are generally very reasonable, and the market offers the chance for finding some real bargains at the moment. Apartments on or close to the Les Forges golf complex are highly sought after.
