There is always something about a town that lies on a river, and Moncoutant benefits from just such a pretty setting. On the Sèvre Nantaise River, the little market town is typically Charantaise and charming, in addition to being located in an ideal spot for accessing the many lovely attractions of the west of France. Moncoutant is also a self sufficient place, with a good variety of shops, supermarkets, bars and restaurants.
Moncoutant has many old buildings and a traditional air, especially on Saturday mornings when the market fills the streets with its colour and cheer. Shopping, whether for daily necessities in a supermarket or a more leisurely wander around the boulangeries, patisseries and other small shops is easy as everything is within reach, and for those relaxing lunchtimes or evenings out you can also find a selection of bars and restaurants.
Along the riverside old water mills are a point of interest, and the riverside walks are never less than a pleasure to discover. Families with kids will be pleased to find the excellent swimming pool where you can take them to cool off and tire themselves out. Fishermen too are drawn to Moncoutant thanks to its excellent fishing centre, Pescalis, which is becoming quite an attraction for holidaymakers and increasing the tourist traffic to the town... good news for gite or B&B owners!
Apart from fishing, swimming and walking, residents of Moncoutant have access to a wide variety of sports and activities. Cycling in the gently rolling countryside is always pleasurable, while golfers, horse riders and even hot air balloonists can find something to keep them happy nearby.
There are plenty of places of interest within reach of Moncoutant. Bressuire is a delightful town, complete with a romantic ruined castle and many heritage buildings, while around Niort and the town of Coulon, lies the lovely Green Venice area of canals and waterways. Just over an hour to the west you come to the beaches and resorts of the Vendée and the fabulous port town of La Rochelle, which is also a very useful transport hub for getting to and from the area from the UK.
Both TGV trains and budget air services will get you from the UK to La Rochelle, Nantes or Poitiers, so getting to Moncoutant is quite easy. (La Rochelle is served by Ryanair, Flybe, Jet2 and easyJet; Poitiers is served by Ryanair; and Nantes by Ryanair, Flybe and CityJet.) A car is always recommended for getting the most out of any stay in rural France, and drivers will find the town not far from the N149 on the D744 or D140.
The Deux-Sèvres is known for offering excellent value on the property market, so if you are hoping to find property in western France this could be a good place to begin. Access: By air: Fly to La Rochelle, Nantes or Poitiers direct from the UK. By rail: The TGV also runs to the above cities. By road: Moncoutant is found on the D744 or D140, with the N149 being the nearest major road.
Economy: The economy is mainly agricultural although small commerce and industries are found in the town. Tourism is increasing in importance.
Interesting fact: Moncoutant has a new fishing centre which is increasing the town's profile with holidaymakers.
