For buying and selling property in Saint Loup Lamairé
Although it is hardly a city and despite being a merger of two villages, Saint Loup Lamairé is certainly full of character and charm. The commune lies on the confluence of the Rivers Thouet and Cébron, and came into being in 1974 when the villages of Saint Loup sur Thouet and Lamairé were joined together. With a pretty setting in the rural Deux-Sèvres, the commune has many original half-timbered houses, a great chateau and many other period features.
With less than 1,000 inhabitants, even the sum of the two villages can hardly be said to constitute a metropolis, and the overwhelming impression is of a small, delightful and tranquil old town. Local shops include a small general store, a baker's, a chemist's and a newsagent's come tobacconist's. There is also a school, a library and a few bars and restaurants. Many larger facilities are found in neighbouring towns and villages, with supermarkets, bars, a greater choice of restaurants and leisure activities within easy reach.
The monumental heritage of the town offers a splendid chateau with a beautiful orangery, a 16th century church, a village chapel and traditional colombage houses and narrow streets. Meanwhile, very close by are walking trails and riverside walks, and plenty of unspoilt countryside where you can enjoy horse-riding, cycling, fishing and more.
The town of Parthenay, set just along the river from Saint Loup, is well worth a visit, as its history and standing as a pilgrim town provide plenty of interest. It is also widely said to be one of the area's most beautiful towns. Shopping and dining are definitely on the agenda in Niort, which is not only a beguiling town but one which hosts an exceptional market every third Thursday, which includes street theatre performances and other entertainment. For something a little different, try taking a boat trip along the waterways of the Marais Poitevin, the so called "Green Venice" which is such a feature of the region.
Poitiers has an airport which is served by Ryanair, and offers economically priced direct flights from the UK. Both Poitiers and Angoulême also have TGV stations, for those who prefer to travel by train. Drivers can find Saint Loup from the D46.
Property around the town comes in all shapes and sizes, and in all price brackets. Whether you are looking for a place to renovate at a bargain price of 75,600 Euros, a village house at 117,000 Euros, a fabulous riverside home at 315,000 Euros or a business opportunity in the form of a campsite complete with owners bungalow at 660,000 Euros, there should be something to fit the bill here.
