The town of Secondigny, which lies in western France in the beautiful countryside of the Deux-Sèvres, is a pretty town with a peaceful way of life. It lies between the Secondigny Forest, an area of beautiful woodland trails and nature reserves, and the Gatines, known for their rolling meadows and apple orchards. The town is fortunate in its natural surroundings, and proves popular with property seekers who desire a tranquil, rural lifestyle.
Despite its peaceful, rural ambience, Secondigny has all the amenities you may require for a good standard of living, without having to stray too far from home. There is a sizeable and well stocked supermarket, a plethora of small shops, including bakers, hairdressers, newsagents and other necessities, banks and excellent schools, which is very important for those contemplating a move with young children. Secondigny also has a good selection of restaurants, with the quality of food being every bit as high as you would expect from a French town!
If you are a believer in the old adage that "an apple a day keeps the doctor away", you will find that Secondigny is the town for you. Apples have been the mainstay of the economy here for centuries, and the town still depends on the apple industry for a good portion of its livelihood. The town's Mairie has even adopted an apple logo! The orchards around the town are also wonderfully pretty, and it is a joy to watch the changing colours of the fruits and blossoms in the different seasons.
Secondigny is a perfect base for fishermen, as there is a large lake known as Les Effres nearby, with several superb fishing lakes, a bar, restaurant, shops and play areas to keep the children happy while you fish. Permits can be obtained locally. The Mairie or tourist office will inform you where you can purchase these.
There is lots to do in the area around Secondigny, so you and the kids will never be complaining of boredom. Daring youngsters will love the Forest Adventure Park, with tree climbing and sliding fun for all, while motor sports buffs can try their hand at the exciting sport of go-karting at a local track. There is golf available nearby, as well as tennis, swimming, horse-riding and cycling. For the less active, there are many lovely places to visit. These include the mediaeval town of Parthenay, the fabulous Atlantic coast and famous port of La Rochelle, the great city of Poitiers and its Futuroscope theme park and many more.
To reach Secondigny by air you will need to fly to La Rochelle, Nantes or Poitiers. Of these, La Rochelle is the nearest, and it is served by Ryanair, flybe and easyJet. If you like to take a ferry and then drive, you should head for St Malo as this is the nearest of the ferry ports to Secondigny. Train travel addicts are also well catered for as Poitiers has a TGV stop at a distance of less than an hour's drive from the town.
Although it is becoming more popular with British buyers, the department is not yet spoiled in any way, and this also applies to the prices of its properties. Property in Secondigny and the Deux-Sèvres still represents excellent value for money. It is a really good place to begin a search for rural renovation projects as there are a good few of these around, unlike in many parts of France where they have all been bought up… and done up.

Access: By air: The nearest airport is La Rochelle. By boat: The nearest ferry port is that of St Malo. By train: Nearby Poitiers has a TGV station, so you can take the Eurostar to Paris or Lille, and then catch a fast train to Poitiers.
Economy: The economy is agricultural with apples of prime importance. Cattle and mixed agriculture also figure.
Interesting fact: Apples are so important in Secondigny's history and economy that an apple is the logo for the town, and it appears on the website for the Mairie along with links to other famous "apples" such as the Beatles record label!
