Genouillé is a tranquil little village that makes a perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of modern life in the UK. It lies amid the bucolic countryside of the Vienne department of Poitou-Charentes, undisturbed by traffic or industry, yet close enough to all modern amenities and many of the region's favourite attractions.
You wouldn't expect to find a lot in the way of shops and other amenities in a tiny village like Genouillé, but there is a good little boulangerie where you can pick up delicious fresh bread and pastries. It may also be a pleasant surprise to find a small bar, and also a hairdresser, so you can always look your best when you pop into the bar for a glass of wine or the local drinks of Pineau or Cognac.
If the lack of shops worries you, it shouldn't, because just ten minutes up the road is the well equipped market town of Civray, where there are lots of shops, supermarkets, schools and services. You can also find a selection of restaurants in Civray.
Genouillé is historic, even though it is tiny. It was a staunch supporter of the French revolution, and there is a reminder of this in the village. It takes the form of a Tree of Liberty, planted to symbolise the Revolution. There is also a Romanesque church which is a classified historical monument.
Many people who come to France enjoy the outdoor life, and there are lots of activities to try near to Genouillé. The countryside is peaceful, green and gentle, and is ideal for walking and cycling. The department of Vienne has four golf courses to try out if that's your pleasure, and there are swimming pools, leisure lakes and tennis courts everywhere for family fun. Fishermen will find themselves in paradise, as the region has hundreds of opportunities for fishing. Just beside Civray there are no less than four fishing lakes, so ask at the local tabac for permits.
There are hundreds of great things to do and see in the area around Genouillé. Enjoy browsing the stalls of Civray's twice weekly market in time honoured French fashion, or take a stroll beside the lovely River Charente, which passes near to Genouillé. Civray also hosts some big antiques fairs, great to visit if collecting French antiques is one of your hobbies.
The capital city of Poitiers is brilliant to visit for a day out, and you will probably find there is enough to do there to keep you coming back for multiple days out rather than just one! See the amazing theme park Futuroscope, enjoy a day at the fascinating Valley of the Monkeys, or just explore the old quarter of the city and finish off with a bit of retail therapy in Poitiers's fantastic shops.
You might also enjoy a boat trip along the unique waterways of the Marais Poitevin or a trip to the Atlantic coast, all accessible just a little further afield.
Fly to Limoges or Poitiers for an easy direct trip from the UK. Limoges is served by Flybe and Ryanair, and Poitiers by Ryanair. The TGV also takes you to those cities if you prefer rail travel. Ferry fans should head for St Malo on Brittany Ferries for the shortest drive after disembarking. And if you're driving, follow the A10 from Paris to find the village on the D35. The nearest major road is the N10.
The Vienne has some beautiful properties, and the area near to Genouillé is perfect if you love the traditional Charantaise style properties that characterise this region. Prices in Poitou-Charentes rose with the popularity of the region, but have settled down in 2012, and the market now offers many bargains.
