There is something very special about living beside a river. Flowing water, whether fast and thrilling or slow and soothing always adds a certain quality to the towns and villages it passes by, and offers possibilities for sporting and leisure activities too. The village of Lathus Saint Rémy, which is found in the pretty, green countryside of the Vienne department in the west of France, is enhanced by the presence of the River Gartempe, providing a scenic setting and also all the fun and excitement of white water sports.
The village of Lathus Saint Rémy is pretty and rural, but has a lively atmosphere and a well developed community. Basic shops and facilities are found within the village itself, including a handy little supermarket, a couple of good boulangeries, a pharmacy and a doctor's catering for most of your health requirements, a bank and a post office, a florist's and even a friendly little bar/tabac. Larger shops and further amenities and services can be found in the delightful nearby market town of Montmorillon.
If you want to do a little sightseeing around the village, Lathus Saint Rémy has a granite built 12th century church, and there are also several imposing chateaux in the locality. One of the key factors of life in this community is a love of the outdoor life, and fans of adventure sports return over and over again to the excellent outdoor sports centre which offers white water sports on the river, fishing, rock climbing and more. Lathus has also a very good equestrian centre, and the gentle countryside is ideal for horse-riding.
The Limousin, which borders the part of the Vienne department close to Lathus Saint Rémy, is known as the Lake District of France, and the many beautiful lakes found here offer many possibilities for great days out in the summer sunshine. The leisure lakes, such as St Pardoux are very well developed for rural tourism, offering camping facilities, a huge variety of sports, restaurants and picnic spots.
Back in the Vienne, the regional capital city of Poitiers is rich in history and culture, and has a wealth of things to see and do. The old parts of the city are fascinating, with historic monuments and lovely architecture, the shops and restaurants are good enough to keep even the most demanding shoppers and gourmands happy, and there are several excellent theme parks nearby.
The airports at Poitiers and Limoges are both good for accessing the region by air, with flights from budget airline Ryanair keeping things cheap and cheerful. Limoges is also served by Flybe. Train travel is a possibility too, with excellent services from Paris, while drivers will find Lathus Saint Rémy on the D54, accessed from the A20 or N147 roads.
Poitou-Charentes is one of the few remaining regions of France that still offer a broad selection of properties at very reasonable (and often incredibly cheap!) prices. In or close to the village there are currently opportunities to purchase some sizeable and delightful properties for around just 150,000 Euros.
