For buying and selling property in Saint Savin
The little town of Saint Savin (or Saint Savin sur Gartempe as it is sometimes called) is found in the tranquil countryside of the Vienne department of rural western France, on the left bank of the Gartempe River. Saint Savin is elegant and historic, but its main claim to global fame is its superb UNESCO listed abbey, whose frescoes are said to be among the finest in the world.
Saint Savin's Romanesque abbey which is called the Abbey Church of Saint Savin sur Gartempe, to give it its full title, is also often called "The Romanesque Sistine Chapel". Built in the 11th century, it has been listed by UNESCO for its wonderful frescoes, and is a major tourist attraction drawing visitors at all times of the year. The impressive Gothic Bridge over the River Gartempe is another sight not to miss in Saint Savin.
Saint Savin, with its winding old streets, authentic buildings and atmosphere and air of tranquillity, is an attractive enough place to enjoy simply for its own sake. After visiting the abbey and the bridge, there are not really any major tourist attractions, but the town has a handful of good local shops and most other facilities needed for everyday life. Good restaurants can be found here too, serving traditional French fare of excellent quality.
Getting out and about to explore the area near Saint Savin is highly recommended, as there is much to see and do in the Vienne and surrounding departments. The area around Saint Savin itself is full of marked hiking trails for those wanting to explore on foot. Meanwhile the lovely main city of Poitiers has more than enough of interest to fill a day trip, and you may even want to make it an overnighter and take an extra day to visit the great theme park of Futuroscope. The Atlantic coast with the vibrant town of La Rochelle is within reach, as are the chateaux of the Val de Loire and the green and pleasant pasture lands of the Limousin.
Poitiers, Angoulême, Limoges and La Rochelle all have airports offering direct flights from the UK. Meanwhile the TGV runs to Poitiers, Angoulême and La Rochelle so there are the options of travelling easily by air or train. If you prefer to drive, the nearest auto routes are the A10 and A20. The town itself can be found along the D951.
The Vienne is a department that offers property at very reasonable prices. Currently, the local market has many properties for sale at well under 200,000 Euros, some even considerably less than that. Whether you are looking to settle permanently in France or just to have your own holiday retreat, Saint Savin is a very good place to look.
