Saint Savin - a riverside market town

The little town of Saint Savin (or Saint Savin sur Gartempe as it is sometimes called) is found in the tranquil countryside of the Vienne department of rural western France, on the left bank of the Gartempe River. Saint Savin is elegant and historic, but its main claim to global fame is its superb UNESCO listed abbey, whose frescoes are said to be among the finest in the world.

Sights and monuments

Saint Savin's Romanesque abbey which is called the Abbey Church of Saint Savin sur Gartempe, to give it its full title, is also often called "The Romanesque Sistine Chapel". Built in the 11th century, it has been listed by UNESCO for its wonderful frescoes, and is a major tourist attraction drawing visitors at all times of the year. The impressive Gothic Bridge over the River Gartempe is another sight not to miss in Saint Savin.

Enjoy the atmosphere about town

Saint Savin, with its winding old streets, authentic buildings and atmosphere and air of tranquillity, is an attractive enough place to enjoy simply for its own sake. After visiting the abbey and the bridge, there are not really any major tourist attractions, but the town has a handful of good local shops and most other facilities needed for everyday life. Good restaurants can be found here too, serving traditional French fare of excellent quality.
