Poitou Charentes is a region of France that lies roughly halfway down the west of the country. It's far enough south to get lots of sunshine and warmth, with 2,400 sunshine hours each year. But, it's also green and lush, with warm summers, mellow autumns, fresh springs and mild winters. So, it's great for holidays at any time of year. It has beautiful countryside, a lovely coast (all 350 kilometres of it!), historic towns and low property prices too. No wonder so many Brits have chosen the region, and claim that it is the number one choice for a second home!

Things to do in the region

The region is one of the best in France if you want to find a varied programme of events, entertainment, sports and cultural activities too. There are theme parks, Monkey Parks, forests, vineyards, beaches, islands and the labyrinthine canals of the Marais Poitevin, so there is no end of possibilities for fun. Aigre - you can find bargain property here!

Then there are additional special markets held at various times in the year, including a British market! So, if you love the French market experience, Aigre is the place to be. Bressuire - a town with a thriving community spirit

Bressuire is another market town, but this time it is set in the Deux Sèvres department. An old town, it boasts its own castle, albeit somewhat ruined. It's still considered to be a remarkable feudal site, though, so it's worth seeing. A later chateau stands in the old castle grounds. Bressuire has a good market on Tuesdays, where you can find local products and specialities. There's a really thriving community spirit in Bressuire, and it's near to all the region's attractions too. The property market around the town currently offers plenty of choice, and plenty of bargains.

Mirambeau - a well equipped town situated near the coast

Mirambeau is near to the fabulous coast of the Charente Maritime. The surrounding countryside is typically coastal, with flat plains that bloom gold with sunflowers in early summer. The Gironde Estuary is just a hop away. The town is not very large, (2,021people) but it has all amenities, with shops, supermarkets, little bars, cafés and restaurants of various types. Days out in summer will definitely see you heading for the lively resort of Royan, a great centre for water and beach sports.
